ACAPL update

Been a busy couple of weeks with back-to-back puppy days and the shelter re-opening! A quarantine and shelter operation adjustments...new foster homes volunteering to help out...community donations of cleaning supplies filling the APL shelves...an awesome effort bringing quality people together to take care of the animals!

So let's see...

Adoption updates: adult dogs Patches, Sandie, Remus, Leroy, Munchkin and Freedom all went home from Green Road...as well as Bradley the cat...and shelter puppies Addison and Kenzie. And, of course all the mall and PetSmart puppies (the H's, the V's, the J's, the C's, the Z's, Mindy, Ricky, King, Mia, Poppy, three of the M's, and four of the T's...I think that's everyone).

Kudos to EVERYONE who makes it all possible! Fosters, volunteers, donors, veterinarians and friends & supporters. And to the amazing staff who put their hearts and souls into this every single day...THANK YOU! You ladies are awesome!

Now we're looking forward to a couple of FUN fundraising events coming up soon. The Carnival on April 1st and the Kitten Shower on April 3rd. We hope you'll join us for one or the other...or both!

Everyone has been so kind...and we appreciate all the offers of help during our quarantine period. Today, we met with a shelter consultant from Intervet who made some very helpful suggestions for the APL. In order to do our absolute best for the dogs in our care, we need the following specific items:

Panacur (or money to purchase)
Masks and latex gloves (medium) for cleaning staff
Dawn dish soap
10-inch Quickie Professional stiff natural fiber deck scrub brush heads (wooden)
Wood broom/brush handles with metal threads
Clorox bleach
Mop buckets on wheels (we need four of these)
New hoses
A steam cleaner

We also need to make the following improvements:

Professional air duct cleaning
Professional drain cleaning
Floor sealing
Infrared radiant heat lamps

If you can pass this list along to anyone and everyone you know, we are hopeful we will find enough generous hearts in our community to cover all of these needs.

ACAPL staff have been in contact with medical experts and veterinarians in Ashtabula County, at UC Davis, and at Cornell University. We want to be sure that everyone understands certain things...

-The media reports on the presence of strep zoo at Ashtabula County Animal Protective League do not tell the entire story. If you have questions or concerns, you should contact your own veterinarian and/or personal physician. We are working to get the story out there so that everyone is aware of any and all risks, no matter how small. We feel very strongly about maintaining trust with our community and we want to be open and communicative with you.

-The representation of our staff as tossing blankets on wet floors is not entirely accurate. Staff report to work EARLY in the morning to disinfect and clean. They do a very good job and engage in strict cleaning protocols that have effectively kept illnesses like parvo at bay for over a year. The floor, despite being sealed, is a flat concrete floor and retains moisture no matter how diligent efforts are to dry it. We have raised dog beds but we are not able to use them in all kennels because (1) some dogs eat them; and (2) some dogs use them as steps to climb out of the kennels.

-Our kennels are not "cold." There are areas of the kennels that may be cold and damp (allowing strep zoo a place to grow), but the ventilation system installed just two years ago works well to keep the facility at a comfortable 65 degrees. The temperature has been temporarily increased during this quarantine period to see if it will help with the dampness in the concrete.

-Strep zoo is an opportunistic infection. It has only affected dogs with (unrelated) upper respiratory infections. Animals that were at the Ashtabula Towne Square Mall Adoption Center were not "contagious," as we do not send dogs with upper respiratory infections to the mall location.

-The mall adoption center has rigorous cleaning protocols and is not a concern, as far as infection, because the animals to not live on a concrete floor, but rather in individual cages that have sufficient drying time between uses.

-The information we have gathered indicates that the likelihood of this infection passing to cats or humans is HIGHLY UNLIKELY. NO cats at ACAPL have exhibited symptoms. All the professionals that we consulted agree that the setup at the shelter protects our cat population from infection.

-Further, the likelihood of this infection passing to humans is even more UNLIKELY. ACAPL is closing its doors to the public out of an overabundance of caution. The incubation period for this infection is two weeks...and we are more than two weeks out from our last active case, so it is doubtful anyone could be exposed by casual contact with any of our animals. Anyone with any concerns, however, should talk to their own physician.

-This infection is like any other in a shelter environment. When you bring in strays...and animals are surrendered to us from all over the county...you have uncontrolled variables that you just have to deal with. We are in contact with professionals who have dealt with this infection in the unique situation of a kennel environment and we will do whatever is recommended to eliminate any and all risk. An operational consultant will be visiting our shelter to give us advice on how to handle this new illness and prevent it from reappearing.

First...A HUGE thank you to everyone who has responded to our strep zoo quarantine situation. Your kindness and support mean the world to us.

Now...down to business...

During the two-week quarantine period, we would prefer if any donation drop-offs be pre-arranged. We want to minimize exposure and possible transmission, so do not want people walking in and out of the shelter facility. You can email adoptions@acapl.org or leave us a voicemail and someone will get in touch with you to arrange an appropriate drop-off time.

Currently, we are in need of industrial type floor fans to dry the concrete floor after cleaning. We have had several loans, but have a lot of surface area to cover, so we could still use more.

We will have a shelter operation consultant in tomorrow morning and will have a better idea of necessary permanent improvements at that time. So stay tuned!

After much discussion, we have decided to try an early fundraiser this year...a dinner/dance at the Happy Hearts gymnasium on March 25th. We have Frankie's Tunes willing to donate DJ service for the evening. And the Board had discussed having evening hours at the Green Road Adoption Center (which is practically right across the street).

SO...here's where I need your help. I need suggestions (and help from anyone willing to help get this all organized).

Theme ideas?
Catering recommendations?
Activities for the evening?

We have an email list of over 400 that we can invite to buy tickets...not to mention our generous and supportive donors...so we need to create an evening that will be fun and entertaining. Give me your ideas!

Next weekend (2/11-13) is PetSmart weekend. We will need volunteers to go with us to the Mentor PetSmart with our animals! Contact Rich & Carla if you can help!

Between Monday February 7 and Friday, April 1st, we will be participating in PetPoint's "Destination Adoption" contest. We will need volunteer help taking photos and short videos of EVERY animal at the APL in order to increase our chance at winning a portion of the $100,000 in cash prizes (and, obviously, help our animals get more online exposure).

Spayghetti is Monday, April 18, 5-8pm. Any donations for the Chinese Auction would be greatly appreciated. Contact Tina Hayes.

Also, please remember that Garage Sale Bonanza will take donations. This is our second largest fundraiser each year...so anything you can offer would be really helpful. We would also really appreciate a temporary storage place for garage sale junk, if you have room.

This place has been too quiet for too long! So we're going to get back to using this space to keep you updated on APL goings-on. OK? OK.

Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed the holidays!

The ACAPL Board of Directors is currently putting our schedule of events together for this year. If you have an idea for an event that you think would be a good fit for the APL, please let me know and we will see if it fits with our goals, availability, etc.

Speaking of the calendar, please keep an eye on the calendar on the website. It will be a list of those events we have committed to participating in. We are making some changes this year...eliminating some events and taking on new ones. Three of the new events that we are committing to are the PetSmart National Adopt-a-thons. These dates are February 11-13, April 29-May 1, Sept. 9-11, and November 11-13. We are specifically looking for representatives for Fridays and Saturdays during these events. We would very much like to operate at both the Adopt-a-thons AND our regular Ashtabula Towne Square Adoption Center...but if we do not get enough volunteers, we will close the mall store during these weekends. The PetSmart Adopt-a-thons are VERY important to the future success of ACAPL and we MUST be as involved as humanly possible. If you can spare time to volunteer on any of these weekends, please let our Volunteer Coordinators, Carla and Rich Madarena, know.

Members, please note that the annual membership meeting will be February 13th at 2pm at the shelter.

I have been asked to beg everyone to keep those unwanted Christmas items, or those old items that maybe were replaced at Christmastime...for Garage Sale Bonanza! We need to think ahead to save stuff to sell to raise money for the APL. This is our second biggest fundraiser every year and we need everyone's help finding those donations.

Speaking of fundraisers. Our biggest fundraiser of the year, Boo Wow, is planning to start looking for a "title" sponsor for this year's walk. This would ideally be a "major" sponsor willing to make at least a $5,000 donation. If you know of any corporations that might be interested in such a partnership, please let me know and we will make arrangements to meet with the appropriate people in charge.

Boo Wow is also looking for "grand" prizes for this year. We would like to get at least one prize to inspire people to go out and get those donations for the APL. Plane tickets...a car...something BIG. Again, if you know of anyone who might be willing to make such a donation, please let me know.

Huge thanks to everyone who helped at the mall Saturday (1/15) with the puppy adoption event! 17 adoptions (all the Chi/Dach, all the Husky mix, and one Shepherd mix) in one day!

We kicked off our holiday campaign today with the help of some very good friends at radio station 107.5 The Fox! Thanks to the live broadcast by Hunter today we had EIGHT adoptions (seven dogs and one cat) and we raised $130!!! You are THE BEST!!!

APL news update

Hi everyone! You haven't heard from me in a few days, so I thought I'd touch base and let you know what's cooking...

~Tonight is Reverse Trick or Treat at the Green Road Adoption Center! Stop by and drop off whatever treats you can spare for the animals...and enjoy some punch and cookies too. We'd love to see YOU in your Halloween costumes too!

~Spayghetti: We need a head count. Please give me good news and tell me we've sold lots of tickets. Oh...and remember to highlight (when you're trying to sell tickets) that 75% of each ticket sold goes directly to ACAPL. We know Madison seems "out of the way," but the Wagon Wheel Restaurant is being incredibly generous and donating their time and space to us.

~Details for Photos with Santa are slowly trickling in. We still need props for all dates...and Santas and elves for the December dates.

~If you happen to have...or know somewhere we can borrow...an artificial Christmas tree (or two...or three...or four)...please let me know! We're doing photos with Santa for sure on three dates. And we're talking about doing some "adopt a cage" ornament trees in schools and around town. So we need lots of holiday spirit to go around!

~I will be coordinating our presence at the Ashtabula Christmas parade. Devon has so kindly offered to make another float with her hay wagon (I'm telling you...she is the parade queen). If anybody would like to volunteer to ride the float, walk with a dog, or throw out candy canes...please let me know. It is Friday, November 20th at 7pm.

~There is a fundraiser planned for The Cove on November 21st. Doc Fiala is chairing this and more details will be coming soon.

~Keep thinking and bringing in ideas for fundraisers. Donations are down and we need to keep up our best efforts.

~We're going to be starting a push for Kuranda dog beds for the holidays. Let's get the dogs up off the concrete for the winter months. Be sure to tell everyone you know about the link on the website. The cost is discounted since the beds are going to us AND the cost can be taken as a charitable donation! Win-Win!

~As a note of information...the Board is strongly encouraging everyone to NOT refer to our Green Road facility as a shelter anymore. As a point of public relations, we would like everyone to refer to it as the Green Road Adoption Center. I know it's wordy and seems kind of silly...but as you know...perception is everything. This is something simple we can ALL do to help improve the community's perception of what we do. Thanks!

We've been busy getting our website up and running efficiently. We have seen a spike in web traffic, so we want to be sure it's as up to date as possible. But it's a lot of work for one volunteer, so if anyone wants to help, please drop me a line at catherine@acapl.org

Along those lines, we desperately need a computer tech person. Do you know anyone who really knows what they're doing and will get our system running the way we need it to run? Someone who works cheap? Someone who would be willing to donate their time as a tax deduction (remember, we're 501(c)(3))? Again, email me if you know anyone who foots the bill.

In other news from the shelter...
NewsChannel5 and Fox8 were both out last week to do stories on our population overflow situation...which resulted in adopters coming from ALL OVER northeast Ohio. It was amazing! I lost track of how many adoptions we did...but we were able to avoid euthanasia for another week...which is great! We just need to keep the momentum going.

Oh! For those of you who've been around...Sylvester was adopted! He was our longest term resident and it was sooooo nice to see him find a family (a very nice couple). I hope it works out for him...he deserves the best...such a sweetheart.

We are still running our donations-as-adoption-fees-for-cats special for the rest of the month of September. If you know anyone interested in adopting a cat, let them know that we spend approximately $70 a cat and would like to recoup our costs...but since our goal is to adopt out all healthy adoptable animals, we'll take whatever donation they're willing to give. It's all about saving lives!

For those that don't know, Davis Towing repaired the van that was damaged when stolen...for free. Now the other van has decided to give up on us...the oil light came on and I stopped, but it wasn't soon enough to prevent engine damage. When you visit the shelter you'll see the kindness and generosity of the Quartet company hanging on our wall. A brand new BIG bulletin board was donated...after just one email inquiry. What an awesome company!

We will post on a board and have the public vote during the day. The picture with the most votes in each category Wins. Contest will start at 10:30 and winners will be announced at 3:30.

These pictures can be of your adoptable animals – we thought it would help to adopt them. If the animal is adoptable, we will put that below the picture. We are being a little sneaky as well as having fun.

The prize will be a Dog/Cat care package. You may keep the prize for yourself, give it to the person that adopts the animal, or whatever you would like.

Hi All!

I need to know who would be willing and able to help me at Dogstock this Saturday. The event will feature a number of bands - last I heard was 11 - on two stages and ALL of the proceeds benefit us! This is a "private" party (by invitation only) and Jonn is expecting 150-200 people. I do NOT want to bring any animals as people will be walking around with their own pets and heaven forbid something bad happens. I want to auction off a signed Jesse James t-shirt, sell t-shirts and sweatshirts, give out bumper stickers for donations, have a donation jar there, etc. Because of everything going on with the parvo situation and some things going on for me at the office, and the unknown volunteer help that will be available, I didn't do a Chinese auction.

Jonn did ask us to help with parking when the event first starts. Honestly, I don't know how long this gig will go - likely late. I am supposed to be on duty at the FD for the GOTL Fireworks but will likely stay at Dogstock.

ACAPL is now collecting letters of interest and resumes from volunteers interested in becoming the ACAPL Volunteer Coordinator. I won't lie to you...this volunteer position will be completely unpaid and will probably work you till you're ready to drop. You're going to have to be in it because you love it.

We want somebody willing to oversee all of our volunteer operations. This doesn't mean you'll be running our events...it means you will coordinate the volunteers to make sure ACAPL events have adequate chairpeople and volunteers to make all our efforts successful. This will be a very organizational type job. We will expect you to be able to keep track of volunteers so we can use their skills and talents in the most advantageous ways possible.

You're going to have to love people and be able to work with a variety of personalities to achieve success in this position. With the help of someone like this who is motivated to make a difference, we think we can get our organization working efficiently to maximize opportunities, participate in community events, and raise money for the animals we love.

If you're interested, please submit a letter of interest explaining what you think you can do for the organization and how you can help us achieve our goals. Here's your chance...share your vision for ACAPL volunteers.

Many of you may not know it, but the old "Shelter Director" position was recently changed and, after a long interview process, a new person was hired as "Business Relations Director."

Kimberly Gilmore comes to us with business and nonprofit experience that we hope will serve her well within the Ashtabula County Animal Protective League. Her new job description contains duties focusing on improving all the business aspects of the ACAPL shelter.

If you're a volunteer, make sure you introduce yourself and I'm sure Kimberly will find something to keep you busy.

Mcarthur is now Moki...isn't he cute all groomed?

Updates from Debbie/rescue:

3/31/09 Moki went to the 'big' hospital today for more evaluation on his eyes and to prepare for his surgery on Thursday. I received a call from the doctor tonight with a mixed bag of information. His ulcer on one eye is not active. His pressures are a little on the high end of normal and he may be seeing some shadows out of one eye. The eye vet does not recommend removing his eyes. He feels Moki is not in any pain and there is no drainage i.e. infection so he suggests leaving them alone. They are also both producing tears. He will get his neuter on Thusday - laproscopically (sp?). They said he is a candidate for this procedure and it will be less stressful and a quicker recovery.----YEAH!!!!

4/2/09 Moki had his surgery this afternoon. Dr. Sims called to tell me they could not do the laproscopic sugery as the testicle was in a tube (sorry I can't remember the name of the tube). They had to make an incision. He was waking up and she said he did very well and they surgery went great. He will be moved back to the clinic tomorrow and I may get to pick him up tomorrow evening. It depends on how he is feeling. I'm sure he is wondering what the heck is going on. Just wanted to let all of you know Moki's status.
He has a couple of chew bones waiting for him. :-)

Hi there! I am currently serving on the APL Board of Directors as acting secretary and I want to try to update here regularly with APL news, information, and (best of all) furry faces. Thanks to Dawn for setting this blog up and allowing me to participate.

First, some business deadlines for anyone interested...
Membership is currently in the process of voting to fill all seven seats on the Board of Directors.
Special Membership meeting will be June 28th at 3:00 at the shelter for election of Board members.
Quarterly membership meeting with election of Board members will be August 9th at 3:00 at the shelter.

Tomorrow, May 29th, is the deadline to become a member of the ACAPL eligible to vote at the June 28th membership meeting.
The membership application deadline for the August 9th vote is July 10th.
You must be a member for at least 30 days in order to have a vote.
Membership dues are as follows:
$500 lifetime
$20 annual
$15 senior
You are considered a member the day your application and fee is received. If mailed, I will use postage date stamps as the date received (simply because I can not be at the shelter every day to check the mail).

Nominations for a seat on the Board of Directors must be submitted to me at least 60 days prior to a vote. Nominations are currently closed for the June 28th vote, but remain open for the August 9th vote until June 10th. You must be a member for at least 30 days to make a nomination and all nominees must have been a member for at least 30 days to be eligible for nomination.

Absentee ballots for the June 28th meeting will be available beginning on May 29th. Absentee ballots for the August 9th meeting will be available beginning on July 10th. They can be obtained from me via email or at the shelter counter. Absentee ballots may be mailed to the Board of Directors at the shelter, 5970 Green Rd, Ashtabula, OH 44004. All absentee ballots must be received prior to the beginning of each meeting.

Ashtabula OH -- Cats losing home -- Donations needed

Ashtabula Animal Advocates is trying to help a local family who needs
to get rid of their animals due to divorce and the loss of their home.
We have already placed the dogs, but cats, as you know, are always a
challenge. An area rescuer has generously offered to board some of
the cats and find them homes, but Ashtabula Animal Advocates needs to
get them vetted and pay a surrender fee to the farm that some of the
cats will be going to. The total amount we need to raise is $563.12

Ashtabula OH -- Special needs Lhasa and Corgi mix need rescue

McArthur is a 4 to 6 year old Lhasa with severe ulceration to both eyes. He appears to be blind and according to the shelter vet will need both eyes removed. He is also cryptorchid and has ear mites, which can be treated at the shelter if needed. He is super sweet in spite of all he is going through, and likes to be held like a baby.

Muffin is a 5 to 7 year old corgi/beagle mix who is obese and has a skin fold around her read end. She will need major skinfold dermatitis correction and tumor removal and biopsy of the tail. Ideally the shelter would love to see her go to rescue so that she can get more intensive care. If that's not an option they may be able to have the surgery done by a local vet if we can raise the money.

Update on Pumpkin (now Spencer)

I just knew you guys would all like to see these new pics of Pumpkin (now called Spencer) that his mom Caren sent me the other day. The little kitten in the pics is named Tyler, he's a fellow tripod from GA. He was severely abused; some kids cut one of his feet off with a pair of hedgeclippers. Fortunately he, like Pumpkin, will be able to live out the rest of his life in happiness. Look how happy they look :)

Ashtabula OH -- ACD mix pup needs leg amputation -- Donations needed

Jack was found walking along a country road by an APL volunteer, dragging his left front leg. He apparently has no feeling in the leg because all the skin has been worn off and the bone is exposed. The wound is already infected, and he needs to have his leg amputated right away to keep it from getting worse. A vet will be at the shelter tomorrow night to do spays and neuters. He can do the amputation then if we pay for his time. This will likely be around $200. The shelter also owes about $75 to an area vet who cleaned and bandaged the wound and made sure Jack would stay safe and comfortable until his surgery. So we are hoping to raise close to $300 by tomorrow night.

I know we are all having a tough time financially right now, so I'm not asking for large donations, but if you can give just a few dollars it would really help. Ashtabula OH -- Gutter, senior lab with seizures, needs rescue!

Gutter (unfortunate name, I know) is a super sweet senior lab. He
arrived at the Ashtabula County APL with severe eye entropian, which
was corrected with surgery. It was noted that his eyes appeared
rather sunken in his skull. Due to extreme overcrowding at the
shelter, Gutter went to stay in the home of an employee, since he was
a good candidate for a house with cats, kids, and other dogs. Shortly
after arriving at the employee's home it was discovered that the poor
old boy has seizures as well. Thanks to donations we were able to get blood work done and have Gutter put on an appropriate dosage of phenobarbital, which curbed the seizures while in foster care. He has since come back to stay at the shelter, and did have a couple seizures when he first came back, but they appear to have stopped again now that he is used to his surroundings.

This is what the family who fostered Gutter has to say about him:

"11 yr old Black Lab (mix I think). Male, Having seizures in his sleep.
Foster home has
4 kids, 6 months,3 yr,7 yr and 9 yr
4 Foster Kittens under 3 months.
2 other dogs. Both around 6 months.
Potty trained, Sits, Speaks, Lays, and Is leashed trained. Love to go
for walks. Curls up next to the bed at night. Gives a low growl when
rubbing his ears cause it feels just that darn good. He lays around
most of the day as any older dog does.

He has been pacing for what seems like forever, cause he associates
his seizures with his sleep. When he wakes up from it, the first
thing he does is check on everyone else in the house to make sure
everyone is oki. Bumping into just about everything. He seems very
determined to check on everyone. Then he just walks around and "walks
it off"."

Gutter is great with kids and other dogs. He's about the nicest dog you could ever hope to meet, and deserves a chance to live out his retirement years in safety and comfort.

We so rarely hear good news, so I wanted to be sure and let you all know how much you've helped the animals of Ashtabula County. The last few days have been truly moving and humbling, especially to this grumpy old "people suck" cynic ;) Between rescues and adoptions, we were able to get over 100 dogs to safety! The shelter has gone from having up to five dogs in some kennels to having more than half the kennels empty! And we couldn't have done it without the help of everyone who pulled dogs, adopted new family members, spread the word, donated, etc. My most heartfelt thanks to all of you. And you *know* all the dogs whose lives you've saved thank you too :)

Ashtabula OH -- Crisis at the APL -- 100+ animals may be killed -- all are free to rescue

I know I've posted many times about the overcrowding at the Ashtabula County APL in NE Ohio. But the situation has reached a breaking point and the Humane Society is about to come in and shut the place down. They need to get numbers down *drastically*....like to about 1/3 of what they are now. This may mean killing more than 100 animals. Euthanasia of adoptable dogs begins Friday.

All animals come fully vetted and can go to approved rescues for free. Transport help is available.

Ashtabula OH -- Poor old Mama, long-shot Rottie, has two weeks to live

Mama is going to be a tough girl to place, I'm not fooling myself on that one. But she is *so* incredibly loving that I'm going to try anyways...

Mama is a senior Rotti mix who is absolutely gorgeous. She is one of the most affectionate dogs I've ever met, and will fall all over you looking for pets. Unfortunately she is heartworm positive and also has mammary tumors. The shelter can treat the heartworm if she has a rescue to go to. In addition to these physical challenges she can be picky about the dogs she likes. She's not overtly aggressive but can have problems when kenneled with certain dogs. Others she adores...she's in with a young male right now who she's madly in love with...she's going to be very sad when he goes to rescue this weekend. And then, to make matters worse, she was SAFER tested this week and failed the food test. So, things aren't looking too good for poor Mama. I was given two weeks on Monday (11.24) to find rescue for her, or else she will be euthanized.

Tiny blind senior dogs need rescue together

Charmin and Casey were brought to the APL from the Humane Society when their owner died. They are both nine years old and blind. They totally rely upon each other, so we need them to go together. Little Charmin came in hw+ but was treated this week and is doing great.

These two are the sweetest little dogs. They're still engaged and curious about the world around them, and all they really want to do is climb into a warm lap for a snuggle. And they'd both fit in your lap at one time! Charmin is super tiny, <10lbs I'd say, and Casey is probably around 15lbs. They're listed as lhasa mixes but I think the recent verdict is that they are poodle mixes. Whatever they are, they're adorable.

I'm thrilled to say that Pumpkin arrived safely at his new home in NYC :)

His new mom Caren (Misspostit to many of you) sent me these pics. The first two are the little fellow (now named Spencer...what a great name!) lounging on the couch, the other two are at the vet's office.

He got a clean bill of health, and glowing praise for what a nice job Dr. Veale did on his surgery.

Don't you just love happy endings? Thanks so much to everyone for making this happen!

As you can see, Pumpkin is doing great in his foster home! Thanks so much to Judy Chapman for fostering him, and for allowing me to post these adorable pics that she has taken. He's ready to go to his adoptive home in NYC as soon as we can arrange transport. Yay, Pumpkin!

And yay to all of you who supported him. He wouldn't be lounging on a couch with his friends today if it wasn't for each and every one of you!

Just got the word that he's healing up well and is ready to go into foster care. We have a great foster home lined up for him, and a great adoptive home as long as he does okay with the foster's cat. Hooray for Pumpkin!

And thank you all so much for caring for this sweet little guy. Someone saw him as a target, but hundreds of other people saw him as the special and unique being that he is, and I can't thank you enough for that.

Pumpkin update 10.16.8 (with pics)

I had the pleasure of visiting with Pumpkin today. He *really* wanted me to pet him, so much so that I was afraid he was going to fall out of the cage trying to get to me (I'm allergic to cats so couldn't love him up, even though I *really* wanted to!). I've attached a couple pics. I do have pics that show his whole wounded side if anyone wants to keep tabs on how he's healing....he actually looks pretty good. I won't post the pics here b/c I know a lot of people don't want to see that sort of thing. Anyways, just wanted to let you all know that's he's progressing nicely :)

Pumpkin update 10.15.8

I finally got a chance to talk to the Health Care Director at the shelter directly today. She said Pumpkin is doing well and has a good appetite, Hopefully they will be able to take the drains out of his wound soon, and then he'll be able to go into a foster home. I'm going to the shelter tomorrow so I'll get some pics then, and I'll say hi to him for all of you :) Thanks to you all for caring so much about this sweet little cat!

Pumpkin had emergency surgery

I visited Pumpkin this morning at the vet's. They said that the infection in his leg and shoulder was getting worse, and that over a cup of fluid had already drained out so far that morning. He was still eating and alert and asking for attention. I did get some pictures which I've attached and which can also be seen at http://withoutqualification.com and http://ashtabulaapl.blogspot.com I have some that show the wound more closely but I'm not posting them here for the more sensitive viewers. I'm happy to share them with anyone who is interested. As of this morning the plan was still to do the leg amputation on Monday, but I just got a call that they had to do emergency surgery this afternoon to remove his leg because he was going rapidly down hill. The surgery went well. Currently is on IV meds and is being kept as comfortable as possible.

That's all I know at this point. I'll keep you guys posted. I'm sorry not to have better news.

Thanks so much for caring about Pumpkin. I sent him love from all of you when I got to visit with him this morning. He needs a lot of good thoughts right now, so please keep sending them his way.

Morning update on Pumpkin, 10.9.8

The APL Health Care Director stopped by the vet's today to check on Pumpkin. She said he looks pretty scruffy but is doing as well as can be expected. Eating a lot, meowing a lot. They are still removing some maggots from the wound, but it does not look as though he will require emergency surgery. If things continue as they are he will continue to recuperate until Monday and have his leg removed then. This will give him a chance to get his some of his strength back and will increase his chances of surviving the surgery.

Thanks so much to everyone who has donated so generously. At this point, if all goes as planned, we have enough to cover his care. Any donations received that are not needed for Pumpkin's bills will go towards the other special needs animals at the shelter. Currently they have about half a dozen heartworm positive dogs who need treatment, several dogs with mammary tumors, a dog with a very severe inner ear infection who needs specialized antibiotics and pain meds, and many many more animals with medical needs. I am going to continue to donate all proceeds from my Etsy shop to Pumpkin.

Morning update on Pumpkin

I just got an update on Pumpkin. He made it through the night. He is reportedly very hungry for affection and *food*! Both of which are excellent signs.

He was featured in the local paper and on a Cleveland news station this morning:

Although both stories indicate the leg might be saved, they must have gone to print earlier in the day yesterday. I confirmed today that his leg will be amputated...apparently the bone is completely shattered. For anyone who's never had the humbling experience of watching an animal learn to survive with a missing leg, it's actually quite amazing how quickly they adjust. So assuming Pumpkin makes it through his current ordeal he will be able to live a very fulfilling life as a tripod. We even have a great home lined up for him if everything works out!

I was incorrect however when I said the leg would be removed today. It *may* be if they are unable to clear out the remaining maggots from the wound any other way, but ideally he will have a chance to regain his strength for a few days before having to undergo further surgery.

We're so grateful for all the donations that we've received for Pumpkin's care. At this point there is no way to say what his expenses will be. Any funds that are donated and not used for Pumpkin will be used for the next APL animal in desperate need...unfortunately there is always a next animal in desperate need.

I misunderstood the vm I got earlier. Pumpkin's leg *will* have to come off but it will only be done tomorrow if there is no other way to get the remainder of the maggots out. Ideally he would recoup for a few days and then have the amputation. I'll continue to post updates here as I get them!

I'm happy to be able to post a guardedly optimistic update on Pumpkin. He survived the removal of the arrow, which was one major hurdle for him to cross. Judging by the extent of the infection and the size of the maggots living in the wound, the vet estimates that he was actually shot at least three days ago. It's actually quite amazing that he is even still alive.

He will still need to have his leg amputated, but is still too fragile for that surgery. If the maggot infestation clears up, they will do emergency surgery to remove his leg tomorrow.

Poor Pumpkin was brought in to the Ashtabula County APL with a hunting arrow through his side. He was found down the street from the shelter. A local vet will treat him, but we need to raise money immediately for his treatment. He will need surgery to remove the arrow, and supportive care for the infection and maggots that have already set in. He is eating and appears alert, so the odds of his survival are good.

Estimates for Pumpkin's treatment range from $200 to $500, but it's hard to say without knowing the extent of his injuries. Although the arrow entered and exited on the same side, it is still possible that there could be internal damage.
