Thanks to all the generous donations we received for the care of Fiona, Brutus, and Candice, they were able to get the x-rays they've been needing for months!
Candice and Fiona's conditions are manageable with pain medication, and we'd love to find a rescue for them.
Updates on all three dogs:
Fiona:
She does have hip dysplasia, apparently pretty bad, but the vet feels
the pain is manageable with Rimadyl or equivalent. Technically she's
adoptable but it would have to be a very responsible adopter...someone who would make sure she had adequate pain control for life. I'd still love to see her go to a rescue. She is *such* a sweet dog. I visited her yesterday and she just broke my heart....that soft gaze, that nice low wag....happy, and a very very Good Dog. The vet concurred that there is no rott in her, and said she is likely a setter mix.
Candice:
Severe arthritis in the bad leg. She favors it because of that,
which has apparently caused the muscle wasting. Seriously though she
gets around *great*. The vet also felt a pop in her opposite hip but
could find nothing wrong there. She too can be maintained with meds,
but it's a matter of finding the perfect home that will be able to keep up with that. Not to mention keeping she & Corey together. I'd love to
find a boxer rescue for them.
Brutus:
His left hip is a mess :( There are pieces of bone missing. Must
have been fractured at some point and not healed properly. He also
has dysplasia in the other hip. The shelter will research treatment options.
Interested rescues are welcome to borrow the xrays to show to their own vets, so that they don't have to incur costs for additional xrays.
Donations for all three of these guys are still needed. We would like to pay for pain meds to keep them comfortable during their time in the shelter. And Brutus's treatment could be costly. Donations can be made via PayPal to ashtabulaanimaladvocates@gmail.com or by clicking this button:
I'm thrilled to say that we've received enough donations to heartworm treat Rugger and Mason! They have been both been neutered and will finish treatment mid-April. Both boys will be great candidates for rescue once they've been treated....spread the word! :)
Interested rescues can contact ashtabulaanimaladvocates@gmail.com for more info.
Thanks so much to everyone for pulling together to help these guys!

Mason!

Mason has those pleading eyes that make you want to do anything to help him. He is a young purebred Redbone Coonhound who is heartworm positive. The APL will treat his heartworm if he has a place to go, but so far no one wants him :(
He is very very shy, but warms up to people and places once he is familiar with them. He plays with his dog friend in their kennel, but as soon as a stranger approaches they stop (his dog friend is also very shy). He learns quickly what is a "safe" space....during SAFER testing he was out of his element, but his posture adjusted and he pranced along once he was in the familiar environment of the kennels. Mason will likely thrive when he is in a stable environment, and a submissive little boy like him should be no trouble at all. He did great on his SAFER test....when the tester did the gaze test she remarked that he had the softest gaze she'd ever seen.
Mason is a young adult dog in the 40lb range. He needs a rescue or adoptive home, or a sponsor for his heartworm treatment. Treatment for a dog his size should be under $100....I will try to find out for sure how much it will be. And of course no one person has to pay the full amount....sponsorships of any amount are *always* welcome!

If you are with a rescue group and can help Mason, please contact Dawn at ashtabulaanimaladvocates@gmail.com.
